aye
1. The OED notes that the word meaning ‘yes’ appears suddenly about 1575 and is common about 1600, but its origin is un-known. Its principal uses now are in some northern British varieties (especially Scottish), as a parliamentary term (The ayes have it), and in nautical language (Aye aye, sir). It is pronounced as in eye.
2. The word meaning ‘ever’, as in for aye, is a different word first recorded about 1200. It is pronounced as in hay.
3. Both words are also spelt ay.
